Companies that made it big from nothing.

Samsung

Samsung have been known as the Korean giants since they entered the phone market and switched to touch screens. But samsung has always been on the top in other product categories. Few people know what Samsung was when they first started.

The year was 1938. In a small area in Korea Samsung wasn't selling what you would expect it to sell. Instead of cell phones, computers and electronics, Samsung was dealing in Noodles and groceries. For sometime Samsung was showing its presence in textile and retail before they got into the electronics industry, shipbuilding and construction industry in  the 1960's till the 70s. They were doing well till Lee Byung-chul, the owner of Samsung passed away in 1987. After this the company split into the Samsung group, Shinsegae group, CJ group and Hansoi group.

The Samsung group is the only one that went on to become a multinational company. Dealing in electronics they are market leaders in many product categories. Samsung is most famous for their TV's and mobile devices worldwide.
Sony

Japan, today known for their self dependence was nothing after the world war. Everything was destroyed and the country had been written off. But there was one individual who wanted to do something incredible in this destroyed country.

Masaru Ibuka decided to establish Sony and their first product was a rice pressure cooker. Unfortunately the idea did not work out because it failed to cook the rice perfectly. It would either undercook the rice or overcook it. So he decided to ditch the product and started focusing on electricity. His first inspiration was the fact that electricity had become extremely cheap after the world war. I assumed that this guy was a man of trend. People would need food so he focused on making a pressure cooker. He focused on electronics as the price of electricity had reduced.

Its pretty good marketing strategy that anyone can implement today. Anyway Sony was making average profits with small electrical products but their game changer came after 9 years of hard work. The Sony TR-63 radio was the first successful transistor radio and the fortunes of this company gradually changed with this product. Industry sales grew from 100K in 1955 and reached 5 million in 1968.

Apple

Who doesn't know this company. It was the pinnacle of controversy in the technology industry and Steve Jobs was the face of everything that this company did since the beginning. The 80s was so radical that it was apt for the company to become famous in this year. People working for this company were crazy, hippies and people whom you wouldn't expect be there in this business.

They started in a small garage working day and night on the Apple 1 and waiting for people to invest in them. Finally when they got Mike markkula on board and the dream kick started. Off course everyone knows what happened with the company in the following years. The Jobs vs Gates phase that was so iconic that books were written on the rivalry and they often threatened to sue each other for various reasons. Finally these companies became superpowers in the technology industry. Apple was also the most valuable company of 2013 which is a big achievement for a company like Apple.

The average joe might feel that Apple might be like those other big offices with a 9-5 job time but no, the people in this company have so much drive that they can work even overnight and still be satisfied and happy. Apple today represents innovation but recent years have caused Apple to take no risky steps. After losing Jobs who was the main driving force behind the company, it was difficult to get someone with the same drive for perfection. Jobs had the ability to see the future of a device presented to him. If he liked it, it was surely going to be a hit.

Even without him Apple's products are still so popular it looks like Steve's soul still rests in all these products.
